Struggling Bedouin families find themselves caught in a standstill between the Syrian government and Druze authorities, with no clear resolution in sight.
In the heart of Syria's Sweida province, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding as over 164,000 people have been displaced due to escalating intercommunal tensions between the Bedouins and Druze communities.
The latest escalation began with a Bedouin tribe setting up a checkpoint and attacking and robbing a Druze man, triggering a series of tit-for-tat attacks and kidnappings. This violence has forced many families, like Munira Al-Hamad's, into a state of limbo, living in school buildings.
In the town of Abtaa, three or four families share each classroom in the local school, which is set to reopen this month. Munira, a displaced woman, is still unsure about her family's future. "I don't know where we will go if we are forced to leave," she said.
The central government in Damascus is in a standoff with local Druze authorities in Sweida, while direct talks between government officials in Damascus and the de facto authorities in Sweida are currently non-existent. As a result, no clarity has been provided on the duration of the displacement or any plans to address it.
The displacement in Sweida has not only affected the Druze community but also the Bedouins. Jarrah Al-Mohammad, a resident of Sahwat Balata, recounted how dozens of residents trekked overnight on foot to escape when the fighting reached their village. Nine people from the area were gunned down by Druze militants, including three children under the age of 15.
The conflict in Sweida has left many families like Al-Hamad's under siege for extended periods without food before being evacuated by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Al-Hamad's family was under siege for 15 days before they were evacuated.
As the situation in Sweida continues to unfold, the displaced families are left in a state of uncertainty, hoping for a resolution to the conflict and a return to their homes. The international community is urged to intervene and provide aid to those affected by this crisis.
