The German national football team is currently on a four-game losing streak, a feat not achieved since 1913. This prolonged slump has raised concerns and put pressure on Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently in his fourth game without a win as DFB head coach.

Nagelsmann's tenure has been marked by several losses, including the Nations League quarter-final second leg against Italy (3:3 draw, 1:2 loss), the UEFA Final Four against Portugal (1:2 loss), and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers opening game against Slovakia (0:2 loss). His predecessor, Hansi Flick, also experienced a similar streak, with five consecutive games without a win, the most recent instance being between March and September 2023.

The team's poor performance has led to speculation about a potential historic fourth consecutive loss, a feat not achieved since 1913. If the team loses against Northern Ireland, Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann could become the first DFB coach with such a losing streak.

Despite the current struggles, Nagelsmann had aimed to start a winning streak this year, with World Cup winners Argentina and European champions Spain as role models. However, the team has not won a game since the Nations League group stage last autumn, with losses against Italy, Portugal, France, and Slovakia.

The match against Northern Ireland, scheduled for Sunday at 20:45 CET, aims to dispel doubts following a poor start to the World Cup qualifiers. The game will be broadcast on RTL.

Before 1926, there was no responsible coach for the national team in the modern sense. Otto Nerz became the first coach in 1926, after being appointed Reichstrainer. Nagelsmann celebrates his small silver jubilee as DFB head coach against Northern Ireland.

The German national football team's last win was against Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Netherlands in the Nations League group stage last autumn. Nagelsmann has not yet achieved more than three consecutive wins, with the last streak happening during the Nations League group stage last autumn.

The DFB, the German Football Association, will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes for the team. Let's wait and see if they can break their losing streak and start a new winning run.
