Air-air heat pumps, a combination of air conditioning and heating systems, are becoming increasingly popular in various parts of the world. Here's a look at the benefits, practicality, and current trends surrounding these energy-efficient devices.

Firstly, the installation process for air-air heat pumps is quick and straightforward. Unlike traditional heating systems that require pipes and heating bodies like underfloor heating, air-air heat pumps only need the connection of the indoor and outdoor units. This makes them a convenient choice for homeowners.

The heating output of these pumps is manageable, with a capacity of up to five kilowatts. This means they can effectively heat small to medium-sized apartments, making them a practical choice for many households.

Matthias Riedel, a homeowner from an unspecified location, installed an air-air heat pump two and a half years ago for 8,000 euros. However, Riedel noted that many people overlook these devices because they are now standard in modern air conditioners.

The heat from an air-air heat pump flows depending on the season from the indoor unit, making it suitable for cold climates. In fact, Riedel found that his smaller heat pump was efficient even in very cold temperatures, as low as minus twelve degrees, during the last winter.

The use of air-air heat pumps is not limited to warm climates. Countries like Spain, Italy, Asia, and even Finland are embracing these climate devices for both heating and cooling purposes.

However, it's worth noting that air-air heat pumps do not heat water. For hot water needs, a separate through-flow heater is recommended. On the other hand, air-water heat pumps, which can cost at least 30,000 euros, are still a niche in many countries, including Germany.

For those interested in learning more about heat pumps, the Energy Advisory Center in Stuttgart is hosting an event on September 17, from 4:30 to 6 pm, at Gutenbergstraße 76.

Interestingly, the first floor heat pumps have been installed in cities like Stuttgart and Heilbronn. The Energy Advisory Center in Stuttgart has recognised the importance of heat pumps and regularly shares knowledge about them at events.

Riedel recommends a chest for the living room as heat from below is more pleasant. Despite the initial investment, Riedel finds the air-air heat pump a worthwhile investment, providing efficient and cost-effective heating solutions for his home.
