Sumitomo Drive Technologies adopts Swisslog's automation-based warehousing system
Sumitomo Drive Technologies USA is set to revolutionize its warehouse operations in Chesapeake, Virginia, with a new automated storage system from Swisslog. The $9.4m investment is expected to bring significant efficiencies, improved productivity, and continued growth to the company.
The system, which is scheduled to be operational by August 2026, includes 14 autonomous robots and 22,872 bins for small parts storage. The bins will allow for direct stacking of bins and storage of multiple SKUs in a single bin, saving space and costs.
In addition to the Autostore system, the investment also includes autonomous forklifts for handling heavier components. This optimized storage solution is expected to reduce congestion and unnecessary movement in processes, leading to a more streamlined workflow.
The warehouse operations, which were previously handled manually, will be managed by Swisslog's SynQ intralogistics software platform. This platform will oversee all logistics processes, ensuring the new system operates with greater precision and efficiency.
