Sun-Adoring Heaven Found in The Cottage Garden
The summer garden at BertramsmΓΌhler Way is preparing for an exciting event, as an aster explosion and a stunning Indian summer are set to transform the garden into a riot of colours. This paradise for plant enthusiasts and nature observers, operated by a botanical organisation, will open its doors to the public on the 14th and 15th of September for an Open Garden Day.
Marcus Vogel, a keen observer, finds about 25-30 different species of asters in the garden, ranging from pure white to delicate lavender to robust dark red. Asters, the transition from summer to autumn for Vogel, are the main attraction, but the garden also boasts a diverse range of other plants.
The Seven Sons of Heaven, a shrub known for its creamy white, delicately scented raceme-like flower clusters, is one such plant. Its main flowering time is from late August to late October, making it a perfect addition to the autumn garden. The Seville orange tree, a thorny representative of the mulberry family, also graces the garden with its inedible green, spherical fruits that have a slight orange scent.
The spicebush, another fascinating plant, puts on a color spectacle in the fall with yellow, orange, and red leaves. Its captivating cinnamon and caramel scent adds to the garden's autumnal allure. The large Amber tree, with its leaves slowly shining in brilliant orange and red tones, is a stunning centrepiece.
Hardy Fuchsias, summer lilacs, an indigo dye bush, crabapple, knotweed, redbud, and cardinal flowers are among the other plants that call the summer garden home. The garden is not just a visual feast, but also an important habitat for numerous insect species and butterflies.
The monk's pepper, with its blue flowers, adds a unique touch to the garden. Interestingly, it releases a slightly peppery scent when leaves are rubbed. The persimmon, brought from Freiburg about ten years ago, is now completely at home in the garden, despite the milder Freiburg climate.
Visitors to the Open Garden Day can expect a garden that is a paradise for plant enthusiasts and nature observers, a place where the transition from summer to autumn is celebrated in a spectacular display of colours and scents. Don't miss out on this opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of the summer garden.
