Support for the construction of a wheelchair-friendly sports facility at the newly built school
In a significant development for the city of Greifswald, the construction of a new sports hall and educational campus is set to begin. The project, which includes a three-section primary school, a 2.5-section regional school, a canteen, a kindergarten, and extensive outdoor facilities, is expected to be completed by the school year 2028/2029.
The funding for this ambitious project has been secured. Christian Pegel, Minister of the Interior and Construction of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, handed over the decision for the new sports hall to Mayor Dr. Stefan Fassbinder. Simultaneously, Stefanie Drese, Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Sports of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, announced a grant notification for a sports hall and outdoor facilities at the Ellernholzteich school center.
The new sports hall, approximately 24 by 45 meters, will be divisible into three equal parts. It will be equipped with a fitness room and a gymnastics room, and will feature markings for common sports such as football, handball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The sports hall will also have an elevator and a spectator tribune, with wheelchair spaces available in the tribune.
To ensure environmentally friendly heating and cooling, the sports hall will be equipped with a geothermal system, in combination with a heat pump and a photovoltaic system. The majority of heat generation will also be provided by the Greifswald city works' district heating. The construction of the sports hall and its outdoor facilities will be supported with eight million euros from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE).
In addition to the sports hall, a further 29 million euros in urban development funding will flow into the construction of the primary school with kindergarten and canteen. The construction will involve piles up to 12 meters deep, woven into steel cages, placed in boreholes, and concreted in.
Two of the six changing rooms will be planned specifically for wheelchair users, and the sports hall will be equipped with barrier-free access. The project, currently estimated at around 80 million euros, is a testament to Greifswald's commitment to providing top-notch facilities for its students and the community.
