Suspect Arrested by PJ for Allegedly Setting Two Fires in Alfândega da Fé

Civilian Altino Penarroias lodged a complaint with the GNR and also provided a statement to the Judiciary Police. According to Penarroias, he witnessed the man exiting the property in a vehicle, and not long after, flames became visible.

In the district of Bragança, the Judicial Police (PJ) has detained a 78-year-old man over suspicions of setting two fires in agro-forest areas in Alfândega da Fé. The fires, which occurred late Friday afternoon, consumed pasture, cork trees, almond trees, and olive trees.

The PJ confirmed the information to Lusa, following a complaint made by a local citizen, Altino Penarroias. According to reports, Mr. Penarroias saw the suspect leaving a property in a car. He subsequently filed a complaint with the GNR.

The GNR identified the suspect after carrying out various police investigations. The man is now facing a first judicial interrogation. In a testimony to the Judicial Police, Mr. Penarroias provided crucial evidence that led to the detainee's arrest.

The fires led to the action of the helicopter based in Alfândega da Fé, as efforts were made to control and extinguish the blazes. The coercive measure of house arrest with an electronic bracelet was applied to the detainee.

This development comes as the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, with many expressing gratitude to Mr. Penarroias for his vigilance and swift action in reporting the suspicious activity.
