Swimmer from Hong Kong resumes competitive swimming after two decades, collecting six gold medals and establishing two new world records.
In the recently concluded World Aquatics Masters Championships held in Singapore, Hong Kong resident Shauna Krkalo made a splash, dominating the 100m freestyle and breaststroke events in the 45-49 age category.
Krkalo's return to swimming after a 20-year break was not motivated by any specific event or achievement. Instead, it was her friend's success under the masters programme at the Ladies Recreation Club (LRC) in Hong Kong that inspired her.
The cause of Krkalo's initial departure from swimming was burnout, brought on by the high volume of training. However, five years ago, she resumed her swimming career with the LRC.
Krkalo's comeback has been nothing short of extraordinary. She won a total of six medals at the championships, setting three further records and dominating events. Her victories included a gold medal in the women's 4x50m freestyle relay, where she swam alongside Marko Boras, Ivan MikulΔiΔ, and Gordan MarkotiΔ.
Krkalo also clinched a gold medal in the 50m butterfly event, breaking her own world record in the process. In the 50m freestyle and breaststroke events, she swam to victory in world record times.
Before her break from swimming, Krkalo was a competitive swimmer in Australia, winning medals at national age group levels. Her return to the pool has been a testament to her resilience and dedication.
The World Aquatics Masters Championships is an annual event for age groups up to 100 to 104, providing a platform for swimmers like Krkalo to showcase their talents and break records. Krkalo's performances have undoubtedly added to the excitement and competitiveness of the event.
As Krkalo continues to make waves in the swimming world, her story serves as an inspiration for many, proving that it's never too late to pursue one's passion.
