Swindlers devise innovative methods to pilfer funds from residents of Kamchatka
A new scam has been reported in Kamchatka, targeting residents through phone calls and popular online portals, including "Gosuslugi" and bank cards. The scheme, which has been attempted on at least two separate occasions, involves "Russian Post" and may also involve representatives of online marketplaces like Wildberries.
According to reports by kamtoday41, the scammers contact residents, claiming issues with their orders. These issues can range from the expiration of free storage to damage to the postal label. To carry out the scam, the scammers ask the victim to provide the code from the SMS they receive on their phone.
One such incident resulted in the theft of 70,000 rubles from a 19-year-old resident of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The scammer posed as an employee of AO "Russian Post." In another attempt, a "representative" of a Wildberries pickup point called a resident, claiming a damaged label. However, the bank blocked the operation, and the scammers left empty-handed.
The scammers also use the threat of additional payments or the cancellation of orders to persuade victims. They offer to cancel the order or obtain a new QR code to avoid these charges. The name of the organisation presented by the fraudsters as part of their scam introduction is not specified.
The scam continues to be a concern for residents of Kamchatka, with the potential theft of large sums of money, such as the 660,000 rubles mentioned in one case. It is crucial for residents to be vigilant and not provide sensitive information over the phone, especially when it comes to codes from SMS messages or bank details.
Stay safe, Kamchatka! If you suspect a scam, report it to the authorities and spread the word to help protect others from falling victim to these fraudsters.
