Swindling at festivals using a fresh payment system?

In the world of music festivals, Germany is embracing a new era of convenience with the introduction of cashless payment systems. Festivals such as Wacken, Rock am Ring, and Parookaville are now using electronic wristbands with payment chips to streamline transactions, speed up processes, and ensure more security.

At these events, visitors receive pre-loaded wristbands that function as their payment method. To make a purchase, all one needs to do is hold up the wristband at food stalls, and the amount is deducted automatically. For added convenience, festivalgoers can check their transactions and updated balances directly in the festival app.

However, the refund process has raised some concerns. Organizers typically require attendees to actively request reimbursement of any remaining balance after the event. For instance, at the Nature One festival, festivalgoers must enter their cashless wristband data on an event portal within a specific refund window to get their remaining balance refunded. At Lollapalooza Berlin, refunds must be requested by email within four weeks after the event.

The Consumer Association (Verbraucherzentrale) in Germany has expressed concerns about these refund processes, particularly the short deadlines imposed by some festival organizers. They stress that consumers are entitled to request refunds of their unused balances but warn that the practices around deadlines and refund conditions can complicate the process for consumers.

Additionally, the German Federation of Consumer Organizations (VZBZ) has raised concerns about additional fees for activating and loading the chips. For example, at Parookaville, a 3 euro service fee is charged for on-site top-ups. Some organizers have also been criticized for requiring fees or minimum amounts for refunds, which the Consumer Association considers unlawful.

Despite these concerns, feedback from many visitors has been very positive about the new payment method. However, some users have reported issues with the system, while others have suspected foul play and reported overcharging incidents on social media.

In response to these concerns, eight festival organizers have issued a cease-and-desist declaration, and ten have been warned for at least one of these issues as of May 2025. The Consumer Association urges festival organizers to adopt fair and transparent refund policies and advises consumers to be aware of their rights concerning cashless payment refunds at festivals.

As the use of cashless payment systems becomes more widespread, it is essential for festival organizers to address these concerns to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
