On Sunday, January 15, 2023, in Bhubaneswar, the Tata Steel Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Odisha's housing and urban development department. This collaboration, which also includes Singapore-based Surbana Jurong Infrastructure Private Limited, aims to foster inclusive, livable urban habitats in informal settlements.

The MoU, valid for four years, reinforces Odisha's commitment to inclusive urban development. It seeks to reduce urban inequality and create scalable models of habitat development. The initiative is expected to directly benefit approximately 2.28 lakh slum households, building on a partnership launched in November 2022.

The ceremony was attended by Usha Padhee, principal secretary, H&UDD; Arindam Dakua, director, municipal administration; and senior officials. The MoU was signed during the state-level celebration of Local Self-Governance Day at Rail Auditorium, Bhubaneswar.

The Tata Steel Foundation will continue managing the State-level Mission Management Unit and will deploy dedicated teams across 10 districts and 19 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). The partnership has already impacted over 1.34 lakh slum households across five municipal corporations.

The collaboration empowers community institutions and aims to strengthen city-level systems. It also seeks to facilitate access to welfare schemes for the slum households, with the goal of improving tenure security, access to services, and better living conditions.

The program is intended to transform informal settlements into inclusive, resilient urban habitats. By translating policy into measurable, replicable outcomes, this initiative aims to foster a more equitable and sustainable urban environment in Odisha.

This news marks an important step towards achieving the goal of inclusive urban development in Odisha, with the support of the Tata Steel Foundation and Surbana Jurong Infrastructure Private Limited. The collaboration underscores a commitment to improving the lives of slum dwellers and fostering a more livable urban environment for all.
