Taubman Sets Termination of CEO and Dean Roles in December 2023
Mark B. Taubman, M.D., a renowned cardiologist and academic, has announced his departure from his roles as CEO and Dean of the University of Rochester's (UR) Medical Center and School of Medicine and Dentistry, effective on or after December 31, 2023.
Taubman, who joined the Medical Center as the chief of the Cardiology Unit and Paul N. Yu Professor in Cardiology in February 2003, has made significant strides during his tenure. He became the chair of the Department of Medicine and Charles E. Dewey Professor of Medicine in May 2007, and later, in 2010, he served as acting CEO while former CEO Bradford Berk, M.D. recovered from an injury.
In 2010, Taubman also spearheaded a successful faculty leadership recruitment focus, attracting top talents to the Medical Center. Under his leadership, the institution has seen growth and development, particularly in the areas of patient care, research, and education.
Taubman's leadership was instrumental in the University's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He dedicated Medical Center resources to build tools and infrastructure for screening, testing, and eventually equitable distribution of the vaccine within the Rochester community and surrounding regions. Taubman also worked closely with Monroe County public and health officials to structure a coordinated community plan for dealing with the pandemic.
In terms of financial management, Taubman assured a renewed emphasis on financial agility by establishing the Medical Center's first integrated financial model. His strategic plan re-invigorated the foundations for core patient care, research, and education activities, and significantly boosted commitments to diversity and inclusion efforts.
Looking ahead, Taubman will lay plans for the future growth of the UR Medicine health system. He will also oversee the opening of the first phases of UR Medicine's Orthopaedics and Physical Performance Center. Additionally, Taubman will actively work to conclude initiatives such as developing local solutions for the health care worker shortage, improving the Medical Center's financial performance, growing the research mission, and finalizing expansion and modernization plans for Strong's Emergency Department and inpatient areas.
The search for Taubman's successor is currently underway, but as of the time of this writing, the University has not announced who will take over the leadership of the Medical Faculty and the hospital on December 31, 2023, or later if no successor is identified.
Before joining the University of Rochester, Taubman held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital Boston, and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. His impressive career in academia and medicine spans over four decades, making his departure a significant milestone for the University.
Taubman's tenure at the University of Rochester has been marked by dedication, innovation, and a commitment to the wellbeing of the Rochester community. His strategic plan, which he created and implemented, spans all three missions: patient care, research, and education, and has served as a guiding light for the institution's growth and development. As Taubman steps down, the University and the Rochester community look forward to a new era of leadership, built on the strong foundations he has laid.
