Tech giant Apple plans to develop an AI search system akin to ChatGPT.
Apple Announces New Search Experience Development with Emphasis on Privacy
Apple is making strides in the tech industry with the development of a new search experience, as reported by Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman in his latest "Power On" newsletter. This new search experience is being developed as a standalone app, with a focus on answering questions and providing personalised results.
The team behind this project is currently recruiting over a dozen employees for its US and China branches. Job listings for the team can be found on Apple's career website, with roles ranging from engineers to machine learning specialists. One of the job listings is for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to optimise Siri's ability to answer personal domain questions.
The team is also focusing on developing large language models, which will be responsible for answering user questions using their personal documents. This is part of Apple's announcement of a personalised version of Siri with improved understanding of a user's personal context.
Privacy is a key concern for the team, and they are emphasising this in their development efforts. The new search experience will reportedly integrate Apple's "response engine," a system for internet search to answer questions, while ensuring user data remains secure.
The response engine is being considered for integration not only in the standalone app, but also in Siri, Spotlight, and Safari. The new Siri, potentially featuring Apple Intelligence AI, could debut later next year.
Interestingly, the team developing the ChatGPT-like search function for Siri is led internally under projects named Linwood and Glenwood. While no specific individual leader is publicly named in available sources, it is known that the development involves collaboration with Google on integrating Google's Gemini AI model.
As Apple continues to innovate and push the boundaries of technology, this new search experience marks an exciting step forward in the company's journey. For those interested in joining the team, job listings can be found on Apple's career website.
