THW and TAL Prepare for Oil Spill Emergencies with Annual Exercise

The Technical Relief Organization (THW) and the Technical Assistance for Civil Protection (TAL) recently conducted an annual exercise in the Chiemsee area to optimize processes for oil spill containment. Over 130 volunteers from both organizations participated in the drill last Saturday.

The THW, a federally funded deployment organization with over 85,000 volunteers nationwide, was at the helm of the exercise. The scenario involved a hypothetical pipeline damage in the Kufstein area, with potential oil flow towards Chiemsee.

In the event of an emergency, the THW's deployment forces quickly erected oil barriers to contain the oil spill. These barriers float on the water surface and are oil-repellent, allowing them to collect oil while letting water flow underneath. The collected oil can then be pumped off the water surface.

The SEPCON, a water-oil separation plant used by the THW, was also deployed during the exercise. This technology is crucial for separating oil-water mixtures and securing clean water.

The exercise highlighted the THW's commitment to civil protection, particularly in preparing for worst-case scenarios involving oil spills. Fabian Kuhn, part of the leadership for the THW exercise, oversaw the deployment operations at Lake Chiemsee.

The THW's expertise and resources are in high demand worldwide, with the federal government, EU, and UN organizations frequently seeking their services. The organization is also involved in bilateral aid, technical and logistical tasks within the EU's disaster protection procedure, and aid on behalf of UN organizations.

In emergency situations, a solid operational certainty is of great importance for the THW and TAL. A new amphibious vehicle was used in the exercise, which transports oil hoses in the shore area and allows for quick, easy, and environmentally friendly deployment force work.

Despite no pipeline leak so far, the good preparation ensures the THW and TAL are well-prepared for an emergency oil spill. The THW's work in civil protection is ongoing, and more information can be found on their website at www.jetzt.thw.de.
