Telecommunications Company Namibia Plans to Expand Fibre Connectivity to 3,000 Homes
In an exciting development for Namibia's digital landscape, Telecom Namibia has announced plans to extend fibre connectivity to various towns and cities across the country.
The rollout, scheduled to commence in August, will first focus on Ongwediva and Narraville, with completion expected before the end of the year. Simultaneously, the company has upcoming deployments in these towns, and in Narraville, active projects are already underway.
The fibre upgrade aligns with the government's broadband policy and supports trials of a new national broadband standard, promising minimum speeds of 25 Mbps. This upgrade is expected to significantly reduce service disruptions linked to copper cable theft, improving the overall reliability of the service.
In Windhoek, the company's three active projects - Augustenium College, Ambrose, and Luxury Hills - are nearing completion. These projects, covering over 2,600 erven, have already begun customer connections. Phase 1 of Telecom Namibia's fibre expansion initiative, finalised in 2024, connected more than 5,000 erven across several Windhoek suburbs.
Timelines for the work in Ondangwa and Swakopmund will be announced once approvals are in place. Telecom Namibia is awaiting regulatory clearance for additional work in both locations. Once approved, the works in Ondangwa and Swakopmund are expected to begin in October 2025, with completion scheduled before the end of the year.
The shift to fibre is part of Telecom Namibia's 2023-2027 strategic plan, which aims to extend fibre connectivity to over 3,000 households as part of its 2025 expansion programme. This move is expected to bring faster, more reliable internet services to more Namibian households and businesses, bolstering the country's digital economy.
