Telecommunications Team Armenia Plans to Lead Caucasus in Switching Out 2G Systems for Updated Networks
Telefónica (o2), the company behind Armenia's mobile network, has announced plans to shut down the 2G network in the country starting from 2025. This move will free up resources for next-generation technologies, aiming to deliver advanced, accessible, and sustainable connectivity across the entire nation.
Hayk Yesayan, CEO of Team Telecom Armenia, has expressed the company's readiness to take this step towards innovative solutions. According to the schedule, the 2G service under o2 in Armenia will be discontinued on May 30, 2025. However, a separate shutdown date for the network as a whole has been set for November 15, 2025.
With the shutdown of the 2G network, more than 1,000 of Team Telecom Armenia's base stations will operate exclusively on modern technologies. This will provide subscribers with more reliable and faster mobile and internet access.
Next-generation networks, such as those that will replace the 2G network, enable simultaneous use of both voice and internet services. They are also far more energy-efficient, helping reduce environmental impact.
The network modernization is part of Team Telecom Armenia's previously announced mobile network modernization strategy. The freed-up resources after the shutdown will be used for expanding 4G and 5G coverage nationwide, including in remote areas.
