Temporary fix discovered for school storage issues
The Grundschule Ebertstraße in Herzogenrath is undergoing temporary changes as new containers arrive to replace three moldy units discovered during exams earlier this year.
In a bid to accommodate the school's twelve temporarily unavailable classrooms, five rooms in the central part of the school will be utilised. The former room of the school social pedagogue has been converted into a course room, resulting in one less room being available temporarily. However, the neighboring music school has generously offered two rooms for temporary use.
School principal Sven Hees expressed his gratitude for the support, stating that the new strain can be compensated for to a large extent due to active support from the administration. Department head Alexandra Meuthen echoed this sentiment, asserting that the restrictions for students and teachers have been kept minimal.
The new containers offer more space and have technical equipment that meets today's requirements. Priority is given to the installation of the two new containers, with the phase of consolidation expected to be over by mid to late November.
The mold was found in three containers within the ceiling structure of the Reuterstraße school. Despite the moldy containers being deemed repairable but uneconomical to fix, they will be replaced by the new units.
The renovation work carried out during the summer holidays also included the construction of a new WC facility and an extension of the existing cafeteria with a washroom at the Grundschule Ebertstraße. Other schools renovated in the same period include the Dreifachturnhalle Bardenberger Straße, Europaschule (Städtische Gesamtschule Merkstein), Grundschule Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Straße, and Gesamtschule Kohlscheid.
The renovation of the central part, originally scheduled after the holidays, has been postponed until the end of November. Once consolidation is over, the renovation of the central part will take place.
A third new container, the so-called C-container, was equipped for use during the holidays, allowing three classrooms to be used for teaching. It is worth noting that no direct contact with mold was made by students or staff.
As the school navigates these temporary changes, it is reassuring to know that the community's support and cooperation are evident, ensuring a smooth transition for the students and staff at Grundschule Ebertstraße.
