Oil Slick Shuts Down BrunsbĂźttel Lock in Dithmarschen District

An oil spill in the BrunsbĂźttel lock chambers of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal caused a temporary shutdown on Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred in the old North Lock, covered the water surface over approximately 140 meters in length and 22 meters in width.

All four lock chambers in BrunsbĂźttel were affected by the oil slicks. As a precautionary measure, operations on the lock were temporarily halted, with the Elbe-side gates remaining closed. The Coastal Protection Agency of the state conducted an examination at the site, and the Water Police initiated an investigation to determine the cause and extent of the pollution.

Despite the initial concerns, quick tests for fuel or oil-based substances were negative at the site. The police deemed the pollution harmless, and operations resumed later that night. However, the responsible party for the oil contamination in the North Sea-Baltic Sea Canal lock in BrunsbĂźttel has not been identified or disclosed in the available reports.

At the time of the incident, there were no indications of the culprit. The exact extent of the pollution could not be determined at night, and the authorities continue to investigate the matter. The public is advised to stay updated on the situation and follow any instructions from the relevant authorities.
