Tennis players Zverev and Bencic commence their mixed doubles match at the US Open tournament prematurely.
In the world of tennis, the US Open is a highly anticipated event, and this year is no exception. However, the mixed doubles competition has been overshadowed by a series of events, both on and off the court.
The competition, which spans over just two days (August 19 and 20), has been facing criticism due to its new format and the allocation of spots. Eight places were awarded through wildcards, a decision that has caused displeasure among doubles specialists.
Top stars typically do not participate in the mixed doubles competition to focus on the singles competition, which begins next Sunday. This year, Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic were among the few exceptions. The pair, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021, were hoping to add another title to their collection.
However, their journey was cut short in the first round. Zverev and Bencic were virtually powerless in the first set, with a double fault from Bencic ending the match after 41 minutes. The final score was 0:4, 3:5 against Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison.
Zverev, like Sinner, who was originally intended to participate with Zverev but had to withdraw due to illness, seemed to be still feeling the effects of physical issues he faced at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event. The heat in Ohio appeared to have taken a toll on both players.
The second round of the mixed doubles competition took place on Tuesday (local time), with the semifinals and final scheduled for Wednesday. Unfortunately, the pair, originally scheduled to face Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova, did not compete due to Sinner's withdrawal due to illness.
Matches in the mixed doubles competition are played with shortened sets, a decision that has been well-received by many players and spectators. The prize money for the winning team has been increased to one million US dollars, adding an extra incentive for the participants.
Despite the early exit, Zverev and Bencic can take solace in their past successes. They will now focus on their respective singles competitions, hoping to bring home more glory for their countries. The US Open continues to be a stage for some of the most intense and exciting tennis action, and the singles competitions promise to deliver.
