French Open 2016: Round of 16 Preview
The French Open 2016 continues to unfold, with several intriguing matchups in the round of 16. Here's a look at some of the key encounters.
Men's Singles
In the men's draw, Novak Djokovic is poised to make history as he bids to become the first man to win $100 million in prize money. With a current tally of $98,735,659, Djokovic is already the highest-earning tennis player of all time. His closest rival in terms of prize money is Roger Federer, who has amassed $98,011,727 in his career.
Djokovic's quest for the $100 million milestone and a potential place in the quarterfinals will see him face Roberto Bautista Agut. The Serbian has a 4-0 career lead over Bautista Agut, including a victory on clay this season.
Meanwhile, Austrian 13th seed Dominic Thiem faces Spain's Marcel Granollers. Thiem has never lost to Gaël Monfils, who reached the 13th place at the French Open 2016, and will be aiming to maintain his unbeaten record against the Frenchman.
Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych and former runner-up David Ferrer will meet in a clash of veterans. Ferrer leads their 12-year rivalry 8-6, but Berdych won their most recent clash on clay in Madrid.
Women's Singles
Top seed Serena Williams continues her bid for a record-equaling Open era 22nd Grand Slam title. Williams' opponent in the last-16 is Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, who is being advised in Paris by Justine Henin.
Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was 6-2, 3-0 up on Tsvetana Pironkova when their match was suspended, while sixth seed Simona Halep was leading Samantha Stosur 5-3 when their match was also halted. Both Radwanska and Halep will be hoping to resume their matches and progress to the quarterfinals.
Spanish 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro faces unseeded Yulia Putintseva, while Belgian 12th seed David Goffin faces Ernests Gulbis in a clash of contrasting styles. Gulbis has won 6 of his last 7 meetings with top 20 players at the majors, and will be aiming to upset Goffin.
In-form Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens faces 15th seed Madison Keys, while Venus Williams faces Swiss eighth seed Timea Bacsinszky in another interesting encounter.
Marcel Granollers reached the last-16 without playing due to Nadal's withdrawal, and will now face a tough test against an opponent yet to be determined.
