In a shocking turn of events, a 16-year-old individual identified as E.B. opened fire on the Salih Isgoren Police Station in Izmir's Balcova district on Monday, resulting in two martyrs and around six wounded.

The attacker, a third-year high school student, lived on the same street as the police station. According to Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor Ali Yeldan, the martyred officers were a police officer and a police chief inspector. Two other officers were taken to the hospital for treatment, and one citizen was lightly wounded in the hand during the clash.

The suspect was wounded during the confrontation and captured at the scene. Initial reports stated that E.B. died at the hospital, but this has been disputed by the Ministry of Interior, suggesting that the attacker is currently in custody.

Security analysts suggest that the attack will likely be claimed by Daesh, although it is not yet clear if E.B. had direct links with Daesh or local pro-Daesh communities. An alleged social media account belonging to E.B. contained posts indicating sympathies for the terrorist organization.

However, it's worth noting that there was no complaint to any police station, no UYAP record, no criminal record, or previous detention or statement for the attacker. The attacker used a rifle his father had purchased 10 years ago.

President Erdogan expressed condolences for the two martyred police officers and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded officers. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. This marks the first time in Turkey that a youth inspired by Daesh has carried out an attack, reflecting a trend seen in Europe.

The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately. The country stands united in the face of such heinous acts, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
