Tesco Announces Closure of Used Car Operation, Tesco Cars

After a year of operation, Tesco, the British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer, has decided to close down its used car operation, Tesco Cars. The move comes as the company continues to diversify its business, but not without controversy.

Tesco Cars, launched in 20XX (exact year unspecified), was a joint venture with Carsite. The platform, previously occupied by Carsite, aimed to offer a safer alternative for buying used cars compared to street dealers. However, some critics argue that Tesco Cars did not take any significant risks in the used car market, instead leveraging an existing platform.

In addition to its supermarket and car brokerage operations, Tesco has also ventured into electric car charging. In partnership with Volkswagen, the company aims to roll out 2,400 electric car charging points at Tesco stores by 2020. Currently, free electric car charging is available at 100 Tesco stores across the UK.

The closure of Tesco Cars is seen as an ignominious end for the venture, which was one of Tesco's attempts to dominate more business sectors in the UK. The rise of big supermarket chains, particularly Tesco, has led to the decline of small, independent shops, with many towns and villages now lacking butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, and grocers.

Tesco Cars presented used cars owned by the trade, requiring a £99 holding deposit before making them available. The company did not carry any stock for the used cars it offered. The closure of Tesco Cars might raise concerns about the company's expansion into new ventures, which some view as cynically based on businesses the general public distrusts, such as banks, estate agents, and insurance.

Despite the closure of Tesco Cars, Tesco's partnership with Volkswagen continues to push forward. The two companies are rolling out electric car charging at Tesco stores around the UK with Pod Point. This collaboration is part of Volkswagen's push to electrify its cars.

The future of Tesco's aggressive pricing strategies remains to be seen, with some fearing potential price increases in various sectors. However, Tesco's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions, such as electric car charging, offers a glimmer of hope for a more environmentally friendly future.
