Tesla implements cabins radar system following a three-year gap, providing complimentary upgrades for select vehicles (Software Update 2025.2.6)
In a recent development, Tesla has announced a new feature for its Model Y vehicles and is offering a free cabin radar replacement for some owners who do not have the radar installed.
The 2023 Model Y Long Range will come equipped with the cabin radar, as per the Owner's Manual. This feature is also set to be introduced in the new Model Y through a Q3 software update, although it remains unclear if this second-row sensing feature will also be activated on older Model Ys and the new Model 3.
Tesla deployed software update 2025.2.6, which introduced a new feature that uses radar units in Model Y vehicles. This offer is likely due to a period when Tesla was unable to install these radar units, presumably due to a parts shortage.
The radar unit is located in the front headliner, just above the rear-view mirror. This unit is available for 2022 and later Model Y vehicles, manufactured as of approximately early November 2021.
The new 2026 Model Y will feature 4D cabin radar, a significant upgrade that will not only provide more accurate occupancy detection but also enable dynamic airbag deployment based on passenger size and positioning. The 4D cabin radar in the new Model Y can also monitor heart rate and breathing.
If a child or pet is accidentally left in the second row of the new Model Y, the 4D cabin radar system can open the windows, turn on HVAC, send alerts through the mobile app to the owner, and call 911 if necessary. However, it's important to note that the new feature is only for the detection of passengers in the first row at the moment.
Tesla is known for continuously improving vehicles, adding and replacing parts as needed, unlike legacy automakers who wait for new model years. The radar unit in question has been dormant for over three years in some Model Y vehicles.
Tesla is offering a free cabin radar replacement for Model Y owners with a 2023 Model Y Long Range. The Model 3 Highland and Cybertruck are expected to also feature this cabin radar and the new feature. In contrast, the Model S/X do not have the radar unit and will not be included in this feature.
The new feature detects passengers in the first row and is expected to be added to Model 3 Highland refresh and Cybertruck in the future. It's still unclear if this feature will extend to the second row in these models.
This move by Tesla underscores their commitment to safety and continuous innovation, ensuring their vehicles are equipped with the latest technology to enhance the driving experience and ensure the safety of passengers.
