Tesla Issues Recall for Cybertrucks Due to Trim Adhesion Being Only Glued

The Cybertruck, Tesla's futuristic pick-up truck, is once again making headlines, this time due to a recall issued by federal regulators. This is the 8th recall for the Cybertruck since its release, and it affects over 46,000 vehicles due to a trim issue that can become detached while driving, potentially causing a crash.

In a video published in August 2024, YouTuber WhistlinDiesel demonstrated the Cybertruck's trim easily detaching using just hands during durability tests. The trim on the Cybertruck is only glued on, which contributes to its tendency to become detached. A clip of WhistlinDiesel disassembling the Cybertruck using only his hands has been viewed more than 20 million times on TikTok.

Tesla will cover the cost of the fix for the recalled Cybertrucks. However, the recall comes at a time when the cost to insure Tesla vehicles is skyrocketing. Long-time Tesla owners are selling their cars in massive numbers, a trend that could be attributed to both the recall and the rising insurance costs.

The negative association with Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, is also hurting the company's image. Ross Gerber, a major Tesla investor, has made multiple television appearances calling for Musk to step down as CEO. Gerber believes that Musk's focus on other ventures, such as DOGE, has led to neglect of Tesla and is hurting the company's sales of electric vehicles.

Gerber is not alone in his criticism. There are protests at Tesla showrooms around the country, with people setting cars on fire and spray painting swastikas on them. The protests are a response to the company's perceived lack of accountability and the continued issues with the Cybertruck.

Despite the known issues, WhistlinDiesel, a YouTuber, expressed a preference for the Cybertruck in a TikTok post. Trump recorded an ad for Tesla vehicles on the South Lawn of the White House, but the stock did not see an increase in value. Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick went on Fox News and urged people to buy Tesla stock, but the stock decreased in value after his appearance.

The recall is not the first time the Cybertruck's trim has been a recurring problem. A similar recall was issued in June 2023. Tesla believes that only 1% of the recalled Cybertrucks will have the issue, but is calling back all vehicles for a fix.
