Tesla Model Y outperforms Moose Test
Tesla's Model Y L Acquits Itself with Impressive Performance in Moose Test
Tesla's Model Y L, a stretched version of the company's best-selling crossover, has made headlines for its remarkable performance in the Moose Test. This extended variant, currently exclusive to the Chinese market, has demonstrated exceptional stability and control, particularly in evasive maneuvers.
The Moose Test, originating in Sweden during the 1970s, is a critical vehicle handling assessment that evaluates a car's stability and evasive maneuvering to avoid sudden obstacles. The Tesla Model Y L managed the maneuver at highway speeds while fully loaded, a rare achievement in its class.
With six adults onboard, the Model Y L passed the Moose Test at an impressive speed of 72 mph (116 km/h). This feat is largely credited to Tesla's adaptive suspension system, refined steering, and chassis tuning. The electronic dampers of the Model Y L quickly adjusted to keep the SUV balanced during sharp evasive movements, ensuring a smooth ride for all passengers.
The Model Y L is designed to prioritize ride comfort on long trips. Its suspension leans toward comfort, smoothing out bumps and isolating passengers from vibrations. Despite slightly more body roll compared to the standard Model Y, the vehicle never lost composure.
While the Model Y L is currently only available in China, expansion to Europe and Asia-Pacific markets is expected. Production in North America is not confirmed beyond late 2026. CEO Elon Musk has suggested that the Model Y L may never be produced in North America, as he believes autonomous driving is just around the corner.
It's worth noting that the Model S, Model Y, and Model 3 have all passed the Moose Test, signifying Tesla's commitment to engineering excellence, particularly for family-oriented vehicles. The Model Y L's notable performance in the Moose Test is a testament to this commitment.
In an era where many SUVs struggle to complete the Moose Test cleanly at speeds above 50 mph (80km/h), the Model Y L's achievement is truly exceptional. Its upgraded climate controls, revamped audio system, and three rows of seating make it an attractive option for families seeking a combination of performance, comfort, and practicality.
