Tesla planning to establish a research facility in Berlin-Köpenick
Tesla Establishes New European Research and Development Centre in Berlin-Köpenick
Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the establishment of a new European research and development (R&D) centre in Berlin-Köpenick. The old factory known as the "Schlösser-Höfe" will be the new home for this centre, which is expected to focus on material research, vehicle development, and powertrain development.
The decision to establish the centre in Berlin-Köpenick was made due to its strategic location between Berlin and Grünheide, in addition to its large area and good energy supply. Over three dozen locations were considered for the new centre, and a complete new construction was also considered. However, the old factory was chosen instead.
Initially, around 130 engineers will move to Köpenick from the plant in Grünheide and smaller locations in Berlin. As the centre grows, it is expected to employ around 250 people in the coming years. This move will increase Tesla's workforce in Germany, which currently stands at around 2,000 engineers and technicians, accounting for about one-fifth of the global workforce in this area.
An important location for Tesla in Germany is Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate, where Tesla took over the supplier Grohmann specializing in factory automation a few years ago. The new centre in Berlin-Köpenick will undoubtedly contribute to Tesla's continued growth and innovation in the European market.
The announcement of the new centre followed Tesla's announcement of the construction of a new factory in Berlin. Initial technical tests in Köpenick are expected to start this year, but they are likely to occur in 2026. Construction work on the plant is expected to begin once the permits are granted.
Germany is leading the way in the refresh of the two more expensive Tesla models, S and X. The new centre in Berlin-Köpenick will play a significant role in this endeavour, as it will be responsible for the development of vehicles and their powertrains. The centre is being managed by Tesla manager Lars Moravy.
Tesla has applied for permits for the renovation of the plant in Berlin-Köpenick. While the exact date for the start of operations is yet to be confirmed, it is clear that Tesla is committed to its expansion in Germany and the European market.
