Tesla is establishing a research facility in Berlin-Köpenick. - Tesla to Establish Development Centre in Berlin-Köpenick
Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced plans to establish a new European development center in Berlin-Köpenick, Germany. The center, which is set to open in 2026, will focus on materials research, vehicle development, and powertrain development.
According to Tesla manager, Lars Moravy, the decision to locate the center in Berlin-Köpenick was influenced by the area's spaciousness, good energy supply, and its strategic location between Berlin and Grünheide. The old factory to be renovated for the center spans around 20,000 square meters.
The move will see around 130 engineers from Tesla's current plant in Grünheide and smaller locations in Berlin relocate to Köpenick in 2026. The workforce of the development center is expected to grow to around 250 employees in the coming years, with initial technical tests scheduled to happen in 2026.
Tesla currently employs around 2,000 engineers and technicians in Germany at various locations, representing about one-fifth of its global workforce in this field. A significant location for Tesla in Germany is Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate, where Tesla acquired the supplier Grohmann, specialized in factory automation, a few years ago.
Moravy considered over three dozen locations for the European development center and even contemplated a new construction. However, the decision was made to renovate the existing factory in Köpenick. The company has applied for permits for the renovation and construction work is scheduled to begin once these are granted.
Germany has played a leading role in the refresh of the two more expensive Tesla models, S and X. With the establishment of this new development center, it is expected that Germany will continue to play a significant role in Tesla's future product development.
This development is a testament to Tesla's commitment to Germany and Europe, and it is expected to boost the local economy and create new job opportunities. The move also reinforces Berlin-Köpenick as a hub for technology and innovation.
