In a significant move, Tesla has introduced a battery health test in its latest software update, version 2025.8.3. This update, created by ESPHome, a popular smart home software platform, includes important security fixes and improvements.

The battery health test, now accessible from the main user interface, aims to address concerns about the health of high-voltage batteries in Tesla vehicles. Previously, owners had to rely on diagnostics from Tesla or third-party shops to understand their battery health.

The test, which can be found via Controls > Service > Battery Health, measures battery health and energy retention. It also recalibrates the battery management system (BMS), and may adjust the energy estimate in the Energy app. This could potentially affect the displayed range. After the test is complete, the range estimate may be recalibrated, giving a more accurate reading of the remaining range.

Interestingly, the battery's energy estimate in the Energy app now adjusts over time based on the vehicle's usage characteristics. It also accounts for the vehicle's specific usage patterns and will adjust accordingly. Despite these adjustments, the total available battery energy remains unchanged in the Energy app.

The battery health test requires the vehicle to remain connected to an AC charger for up to 16 hours to complete the diagnostic. The test can be run from the Energy app to measure energy retention compared to when the battery was new.

The introduction of this battery health test is a step towards transparency and empowering Tesla owners to better understand the health of their vehicles' batteries. For those considering a Tesla purchase, a referral link is available that provides three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) when used.

In addition to the battery health test, the Energy app now displays the last 10, 100, or 200 miles (15, 150, or 300 kilometers) of energy usage. This feature, which can be found in the App Launcher > Energy app > Consumption, offers users a clearer picture of their vehicle's energy consumption patterns.

This update marks a significant step forward in Tesla's commitment to providing its customers with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their vehicles and their energy usage.
