The University of Texas Longhorns, currently ranked as the preseason No. 1 team, suffered a setback in their opening game against No. 3 Ohio State. Arch Manning, the highly-touted quarterback, made his first start for the Longhorns, but his performance was less than impressive.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged Manning's improvement in the second half but also criticized the high expectations surrounding the young quarterback. Sarkisian compared Manning's performance to a single chapter in a book, suggesting that it's too early to judge him based on this one game.

Manning's best throw of the afternoon was a 30-yard pass to Jack Endries, a moment that showcased his arm talent. Yet, a missed opportunity on third-and-5, where Manning had an open receiver, Ryan Wingo, but threw the pass behind him, highlighted the areas that need improvement.

With the loss, the Longhorns now have an opportunity to clean things up and get ready for SEC play over the next month. They will face San Jose State and UTEP in the next two weeks, providing a chance to regroup and prepare for the rigours of conference play.

Despite the loss, Manning is expected to be the starting quarterback for Texas in the 2025 season. Manning spent the past two seasons sitting behind Quinn Ewers and learning, and this experience could prove invaluable as he continues to develop.

Sarkisian also commented on the days of an undefeated national champion being over, acknowledging the increased competitiveness in college football. However, with a month to prepare, the Longhorns will be aiming to bounce back and continue their pursuit of a playoff spot.
