In the quest for a comfortable and functional living space, the master bedroom often takes centre stage. With over a decade of experience in interior and garden design, as well as eco-friendly practices and sustainable sourcing, Lee Trethewey, the general manager at Sustainable Furniture, shares valuable insights on creating the perfect master bedroom.

A master bedroom should ideally accommodate a king-sized bed, wardrobe space, a seating area, and may even feature an ensuite bathroom or walk-in closet. However, the type of room and its function should be carefully considered when deciding on the size of a bedroom. For instance, a child's room requires more space for playing, studying, and storage as they grow up.

Lee suggests a minimum size of 15 square metres for a master bedroom, with 20 square metres providing ample space for a multifunctional master bedroom. Building regulations suggest a minimum of 6.5 square metres for a single occupant bedroom over the age of 10. If there are two occupants in a HMO, the minimum room size is 10.22 square metres.

Managing a large double bedroom can be achieved through room dividers, built-in wardrobes, large furniture, en-suites, and different zones. Good-sized, openable windows and space for a dehumidifier are recommended for a small bedroom to ensure good airflow quality. To maintain a spacious feel, avoid crowding a small bedroom with furnishings.

In larger homes, the optimal size for a master bedroom typically ranges from 20 to 30 square meters (215 to 320 square feet), allowing enough space for a bed, furniture, and comfortable movement. The size of a spare room depends on its intended use and the space available in the home. A versatile range of approximately 9-12 square metres is recommended for a guest room, considering its intended use.

Creative use of space can also be achieved through the use of furniture. Rugs, four-poster beds, and a standalone bath in the bedroom can be used to utilise space effectively. Lee Trethewey recommends having at least 70cm of clearance around the bed for ease of movement.

With a focus on sustainability, Sustainable Furniture offers high-quality furnishings for home and garden. By choosing eco-friendly practices and sustainable sourcing, you can create a master bedroom that not only looks beautiful but also contributes to a healthier environment.
