The Baltic Sea experienced a 30 centimeter decrease in water level.

In a recent announcement, energy company Leag has revealed that the current water level at the Cottbus Ostsee, a lake spanning 1,900 hectares and created from a former open-cast coal mine, has dropped to 30 centimeters below its target level of 62.5 meters. This decline is primarily due to seasonal fluctuations and high temperatures causing evaporation.

The Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbauverwaltungsgesellschaft (LMBV) is responsible for maintaining the water inflow into the Cottbuser Ostsee. However, the resumption of flooding to maintain the target water level will depend on the availability of water in the Spree.

Since April 2019, Spree water has mainly flowed into the lake during the winter months. Yet, due to the ongoing drought, flooding had to be interrupted. Leag has assured that they will announce significant changes, such as the resumption of flooding to maintain the target water level, in the usual way.

The flooding of the Ostsee, which lasted for five and a half years, provisionally ended in December 2024. Despite the current situation, Leag maintains that the decrease in water level is within expected and moderate limits, according to a Leag spokesperson.

The Greens in the Spree-Neiße district have criticised Leag for stopping the publication of water level data on an information board at the Ostsee. In response, Leag stated that the publication of water level data was no longer necessary after reaching the target water level. However, the Greens have called for regular information to be resumed at the Ostsee.

Currently, no water can be provided to the Ostsee as other users have priority. Leag will announce the resumption of flooding if water availability in the Spree allows. In the coming years, the water level will still need to be supported with Spree water.

The drop in water level at the Cottbus Ostsee is a natural occurrence due to seasonal changes and drought. Leag continues to monitor the situation closely and will take necessary actions to maintain the water level within acceptable limits.
