The economic landscape continues to showcase an equally grim outlook
In a recent update, several key economic indicators for the second quarter of 2025 in the Netherlands have been revealed, offering a snapshot of the country's economic performance.
According to the first estimate by Statistics Netherlands, gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 0.1% in Q2 2025, relative to the previous quarter. This modest growth was primarily driven by investments and public consumption. The GDP (volume), seasonally adjusted, stood at 106.9 in Q2 2025, with 2021 as the base year (100).
One of the notable changes in the labour market was a decrease in the number of vacancies. In Q2 2025, the number of vacancies decreased by around 7 thousand to nearly 389 thousand. Despite this decline, unemployment remained relatively stable, with 388 thousand people out of work in July 2025, representing 3.8% of the labor force. This figure has remained unchanged over the past three months.
The hours worked by employees and self-employed persons also saw a slight decrease. In Q2 2025, they worked a total of 3.7 billion hours, adjusted for seasonal effects, which was 0.3% less than the previous quarter.
In the realm of business, the turnover of temporary employment and job placement agencies saw a 1.5% decrease in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024. Contrastingly, the number of bankruptcies showed a positive trend, decreasing by 4 percent in July 2025 compared to June, with 18 fewer bankruptcies recorded.
Lastly, the average price of an owner-occupied dwelling (excluding newbuild homes) experienced an increase, growing by 8.6% year-on-year and 0.7% relative to June in July 2025.
While the Business Cycle Tracer platform in the Netherlands does not explicitly state the institution responsible for providing the data, these figures offer valuable insights into the Dutch economy's current state and trends.
