"The event "Road Oases" launches a fresh phase"

The Ostalbkreis, a district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, has once again triumphed in the Street Oases competition, this time taking the top spot in the "Species Protection" category. This marks the second consecutive year that the district has emerged victorious in this category.

Organised by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, the Street Oases competition recognises commitment in both climate and species protection. The Ostalbkreis impressed the judges with an outstanding professional concept, focusing on innovative approaches for species protection.

One of the key measures in their application included the planting of flowering strips with native plants. These habitats not only strengthen biological diversity but also serve as green corridors. The Ostalbkreis's focus in the Street Oases competition also includes the promotion of insect biodiversity through the creation of valuable habitats.

State Secretary Zimmer emphasised that the administration and citizens working together make the Street Oases an inspiring example of what is possible. The winning "Street Oasis 2024" plaque was presented to the two trainees for road sweeper of the road maintenance department Ellwangen in the Ostalbkreis.

Meanwhile, in the "Climate Protection" category, Überlingen took the first place for successfully redesigning several city center areas. Examples of measures in this category include planting climate-resistant plants and unsealing soil for better rainwater percolation. The project in Überlingen was supported by many volunteers from the "City Beautifiers" initiative.
