The Federal Government is proposing to increase tax burden on the wealthy citizens
In the first half of the year, the expenditure of Germany's approximately 90 health insurance funds increased by 7.95% to 166.1 billion euros, as reported by the latest statistics. This rise in expenditure has sparked discussions about the contributions to health insurance, which are shared equally between employees and employers, amounting to 14.6% of gross salary.
Each health insurance fund sets its own additional contribution based on its financial situation for its insured. The beginning of the year saw an average additional contribution for health insurance rise to 2.9%. However, each autumn, an expert circle determines an orientation value for the average additional contribution in the following year.
The President of the Federal Association of Taxpayers, Reiner Holznagel, has suggested cuts in social benefits instead of continually raising contribution limits. He argues that this could help alleviate the burden on both employees and employers.
Dennis Radtke (CDU) has stated that the federal government has limited maneuverability in raising contribution limits due to the development of wages. He also notes a potential dilemma: an increase in the contribution assessment limit could lead to an increase in additional contributions in the SHI, potentially burdening employees twice.
Looking ahead, the planned contribution schemes for individual insurance types in 2026 include adjustments to health, pension, and unemployment insurance rates in Germany. The specific percentage changes for each insurance category are outlined in the latest government proposals for these changes.
It's important to remember that these changes are still proposals and may undergo further discussions and adjustments before they are implemented. The goal, as always, is to ensure a sustainable and fair health insurance system for all Germans.
