The increasing demand for female workforce is observed in the oil and gas industry.
In the bustling world of Russia's oil and gas industry, a significant shift is underway. With over 170,000 vacancies posted from January to August 2025, representing a 36% increase from the previous year, the sector is experiencing a surge in job opportunities.
However, this growth comes with its challenges. Two-thirds of the workforce in this industry are men, but women are making their mark, accounting for 27% of line staff and 15% of management positions. Yet, women job seekers are expected to ask for an average salary of around 72,000 rubles, while their male counterparts ask for at least 116,000 rubles in 2025.
The regions of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan are feeling the brunt of the staff shortage, with 10,000 and 7,000 vacancies respectively in the oil and gas sector. Moscow, on the other hand, leads the pack with over 11,000 vacancies, followed closely by the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and Krasnodar Krai, each with over 6,800 and 7,500 vacancies respectively.
The most in-demand profession in 2025 is electricians, with over 37,000 vacancies posted for them. Welders come in second place with nearly 18,000 new jobs, and laborers take third place with 13,500 vacancies. Geologist positions offer the highest income, with a median salary of 174,000 rubles, followed closely by geodesists, who earn a median salary of over 160,000 rubles. Machine operators also have a high salary level, with a median salary of 154,000 rubles.
Despite the staff shortage, Russian employers in the oil and gas sector have been inviting women to work or interviews 14% more often than the previous year, a positive step towards gender balance in the industry. However, the name of the manager who made the highest salary demand in 2025 remains undisclosed.
The oil and gas sector currently ranks eighth in terms of salary levels among other industries, with the median proposed salary across the country being 100,000 rubles. This sector, therefore, offers promising opportunities for those seeking employment, especially in regions with high demand and in high-income professions.
