The Pilatus PC-21, the aircraft selected for Princess Leonor's flight training, indeed is the model in question.
In a significant milestone for her preparation in the Spanish Armed Forces, Princess Leonor has started a new phase of her training at the General Air Academy (AGA) in San Javier, Murcia. The Princess will be learning to fly using the Pilatus PC-21, a state-of-the-art advanced training aircraft.
The Pilatus PC-21, also designated as 'E.27' in the Air Force, is built by Pilatus Aircraft, based in Stans, Nidwalden, Switzerland. This aircraft is renowned for its dynamic and technical performance, simulating real fighter jets from the first hours of flight.
The Pilatus PC-21 is equipped with a turbojet engine and features an on-board oxygen generation system (OBOGS), a pressurized cabin, a Martin-Baker CH16C (Zero-Zero) ejection seat, and an anti-G system. The aircraft also boasts a five-blade propeller and a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-68B engine, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 685 km/h and fly at altitudes over 11,580 meters.
One of the most notable aspects of the Pilatus PC-21 is its tandem layout, with the student in front and the instructor behind. This design ensures a safe and effective learning environment for the Princess.
The Pilatus PC-21 is also capable of simulating advanced scenarios such as air-to-air combat, strategic navigation, electronic warfare, or night deployment, making it the most sophisticated aircraft of its kind. Spain initially acquired 24 units of the Pilatus PC-21 in 2020, making it the largest operator of the PC-21 in Europe. Another 16 aircraft were ordered subsequently.
Before donning her Air Force uniform and taking to the skies in the Pilatus PC-21, Princess Leonor had previously passed through the General Military Academy in Zaragoza and the Naval School in Pontevedra. She also completed a training voyage aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano.
On her first day at the General Air Academy, the Princess signed the honor book and changed into a green work jumpsuit. Registered users, such as Jorge Herrero, can log in to follow her progress throughout her training. For subscribers, there is also the option to subscribe for updates.
As Princess Leonor embarks on this exciting new chapter in her training, the nation eagerly awaits her progress in mastering the Pilatus PC-21.
