Unveiling the root causes of the baby boomer retirement predicament - The root cause of the pension predicament among baby boomers
In the coming years, Germany is set to experience a significant demographic shift as the Baby Boomer generation begins to retire. According to the 2024 Microcensus, within 15 years, nearly a third (31 percent) of the current working population is expected to retire, equating to around 13.4 million people who will exceed the legal retirement age of 67 by 2039.
Currently, there are still 4.4 million working-age individuals within the 60-64 age group, contributing to the labor force. The 55-59 age group, with 5.6 million working-age individuals, is the largest age group on the labor market.
The departure of the Baby Boomers will result in a substantial departure from the labor market, creating a challenge that key institutions are working to address. The Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IAB), chambers of industry and commerce (IHK), private continuing education providers and academies, professional associations, and universities offering continuing education and executive programmes are all actively involved in addressing the labor market challenges caused by the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation.
The smaller subsequent generations cannot numerically compensate for the departure of the Baby Boomers from the labor market. This means that the retirement of the Baby Boomers will require these generations to fund their pensions, further emphasising the importance of addressing the labor market challenges presented by this demographic shift.
It is essential to recognise that those considered working-age are all employed and unemployed individuals aged 15 and above who are actively seeking work. As Germany navigates this demographic challenge, it will be crucial to foster an environment that supports the employment of individuals across all age groups, ensuring a stable and productive labor market for the future.
