The Status of Elon Musk's America Party Remains Unclear After a Month
Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur behind SpaceX and Tesla, announced on July 5 that he would form the "America Party" in the United States. The announcement came after Musk expressed frustration over former ally Donald Trump getting the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed.
While the announcement has sparked interest, Musk has remained silent on the matter for weeks, not taking significant steps to form the party. This silence has been attributed to Musk's lack of formal steps to establish the party and his reported reconsideration of the party's formation, as well as his continued political donations to GOP causes.
Recent polling suggests that although many Americans are open to the idea of a third political party, many are skeptical of one founded by Musk. Only 11% of Americans would consider signing up for a Musk-founded party, according to a survey.
The process of starting a political party in the US is not straightforward. It involves filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, gathering signatures to get on the ballot across states, and finding candidates for House and Senate seats.
Despite the skepticism and the lack of updates, some prominent figures have taken Musk's plans seriously. Mark Cuban, head of the Democratic Party, suggested that Musk's plans should be taken seriously.
Interestingly, Musk was encouraged by the results of an X/Twitter poll about creating a new political party. The poll, which asked users if they would support a new party, received a positive response from a significant number of participants.
However, Musk's level of commitment to the America Party is uncertain. Musk is known for his intense work ethic, often spending extended hours at work on projects he is passionate about. It remains to be seen if the America Party will become one of his major passions.
According to YouGov, 46% of Americans think a third party is necessary in the current two-party system. Whether Musk's America Party will fill this perceived need remains to be seen. As of now, the party is still in its infancy, with no official updates from Musk for weeks.
