Berlin's Plans to Honour Helmut Kohl: A Journey Through Uncertainty

In the heart of Berlin, discussions are underway about a potential tribute to a significant political figure of the past. Helmut Kohl, internationally recognised as the "Chancellor of Unity", is being considered for a street or square in the district of Mitte.

Kohl, a CDU politician and honorary citizen of Berlin, played a pivotal role in the German-German reunification from 1982 to 1998. His leadership during this period led to the historic event that shaped modern Germany.

However, the current status of naming a street after former Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Berlin is uncertain. Despite years of demand and a recent agreement between Berlin's CDU and SPD in the coalition agreement, no corresponding initiative by the district assembly has been reported as of now.

The district offices are typically responsible for the naming or renaming of streets and squares in Berlin. However, the district office of Mitte has not been involved in this topic so far. Discussions about naming a street after Helmut Kohl are ongoing within the Senate Chancellery.

The Bundestag and the Federal Chancellery, key institutions of German politics, are located in the district of Mitte, making it a predestined location for a street or square named after Kohl. Street names in the government district of Mitte already reference former SPD Chancellor Willy Brandt and the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic, Konrad Adenauer (CDU).

The planned renaming of a street or square in Mitte after Helmut Kohl requires publication in the official gazette and would take effect three months later, assuming no objections. However, the implementation of naming a street after Kohl by October 3rd, the Day of German Unity, is not realistic.

Despite the controversy surrounding his role in the CDU donation scandal, Kohl's contributions to German history, particularly his leadership during the reunification, have not been forgotten. Berlin's governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) announced plans to honour Helmut Kohl this year, in reference to the 35th anniversary of German Unity.

Helmut Kohl was born in 1930 and passed away in 2017. His legacy continues to be debated, but one thing is certain: his impact on German history is undeniable. As the discussions about a potential tribute to Kohl in Berlin continue, the city waits to see if a street or square will bear his name.
