The Walker Cup 2025: Essential Details About the Renowned Amateur Golf Tournament

The Walker Cup, an esteemed amateur team event, returns every two years, celebrating its 49th edition since its inception in 1922. Named after USGA President George Herbert Walker, the competition has seen the USA dominate the majority of matches, winning 38 out of 48 editions. However, Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) have had their fair share of success, particularly around the turn of the millennium.

From 1995 to 2003, GB&I enjoyed a successful period, winning four out of five Walker Cups. Their first away win (and third ever) was in 1989 at Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, and they clinched another victory in 1971 at St Andrews. In stark contrast, the USA won 11 of the next 12 matches after World War Two, including the first contest in 1922.

The 2025 Walker Cup will take place at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, California, with Team USA led by Captain Nathan Smith. GB&I, on the other hand, will aim to reclaim their past glory, with their team yet to be announced.

The competition consists of foursomes and singles matches over two days. On the second day, all 10 amateurs compete in singles match play to close out the competition. Each outright victory in the Walker Cup earns one point, and a halved match results in half a point. The first team to reach 13.5 points will lift the title.

The 2026 Walker Cup will be held at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland, followed by the 2028 event at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. The next venue for the Walker Cup in 2026 is Royal Dublin Golf Club in Ireland.

The Walker Cup has witnessed some memorable moments, such as the tie in 1965 at Baltimore Country Club, which remains the only one in the history of the event.

As the 2025 Walker Cup approaches, both teams will be eager to showcase their skills and determination, continuing the rich tradition and fierce rivalry that has defined this prestigious event for nearly a century.
