In the heart of Derendorf, the Catholic Primary School on Essener Straße 1 hosted a unique event focused on promoting a greener and healthier lifestyle for students. The theme of the day was "Walking to School," and Principal Natascha Dörner emphasised the importance of participating, stating that it sends a powerful message to children and parents alike that they can make a difference for themselves and the environment by choosing to walk.

The event featured a competition among participating schools, with cash prizes of 1,000, 500, and 250 euros awarded to the schools with the highest percentage of students who walked to school. The Community Primary School Kaiserswerth at Fliednerstraße 32 took third place, while the Catholic Primary School Essener Straße claimed second, and the Catholic Primary School Florensstraße took the top spot.

A colourful fringe program was also part of the event, offering games, movement, and pedestrian training for the students. Another highlight was the arrival of the "Pedibuses," formed by walking students. Parents played the role of "bus drivers," guiding their children to schools according to a fixed schedule with different "lines."

A sign forest was set up where children could test and improve their knowledge of traffic signs, and a scooter course was available on the school grounds. The prizes, intended to boost students' mobility and fitness, aimed to encourage more children to walk or scoot to school in the future.

It was a day filled with fun, learning, and a strong message about the importance of walking and the benefits it brings to both individuals and the environment. The event at the Catholic Primary School Essener Straße 1 in Derendorf was the only one centred around the theme "Walking to School" mentioned in the search results.
