Thriving travel destination: the rise of olive oil tours

In the world of olive oil, Australia may not be the first name that comes to mind, but it's making a name for itself as an emerging destination for gourmet tourists.

Australia's olive oil industry is a niche product, yet it's notable for its quality. The country ranks tenth in oleotourism, a term used to describe tourism focused on the production, history, and tasting of olive oil.

Despite its comparatively lower position, Australia offers eleven listed olive oil tastings, providing an opportunity for tourists to immerse themselves in the Australian olive oil culture.

Europe, however, dominates the top five travel destinations for oleotourism. Spain, with its vast olive cultivation area and production of approximately six million tons of olive oil annually, leads the pack. Turkey, another European country, also features in the top five.

Italy, known for its rich culinary traditions, offers the largest selection of guided olive oil tastings, with 147 offers. Greece, the birthplace of the oldest proven olive culture, also receives above-average positive online mentions for olive oil tourism.

Spain follows closely behind Italy with 18 listed olive oil tastings. The other top five countries of origin for oleotourism, not mentioned in this news summary, are Spain, Italy, Greece, Tunisia, and Turkey.

While Europe and Spain, in particular, are powerhouses in the olive oil industry, it's interesting to note that Albania, with over nine million hectares of olive cultivation, has barely developed its tourist offers for olive oil tourism.

As Australia continues to grow its olive oil industry and develop its olive oil tourism offerings, it's clear that it's on its way to becoming a must-visit destination for olive oil enthusiasts.
