Throngs of fans flock to South Africa's Comic Con, with limited star-studded attractions
The Comic Con Africa 2022, held in Johannesburg, was a four-day celebration of pop culture, gaming, and cosplay, attracting thousands of enthusiasts from across the continent.
For Tshegofatso Nabe, a teenager who has attended the festival for the past four years, it's the only time of the year she can wear her striking costume inspired by a character from the game "Honkai: Star Rail" without being looked at strangely. "It's a chance to express myself and connect with others who share the same passion," she said.
Damian Wilson, a 31-year-old salesman, attended the event for the third year in a row. "We're just here for the vibes," he explained, echoing the sentiments of many attendees.
The festival, considered the only major convention in Africa for people to express themselves and connect with others in the same fandom, took place at a venue that will also host G20 leaders in November. Elias Machete, an exhibitor and former gaming champion, believes that people are focusing too much on the numbers rather than the quality of the event. "The Johannesburg Comic Con is comparable in quality to those held in Europe and America," he stated.
The event featured a variety of activities, including competitions for popular eSports games like "FIFA", interspersed with music. Rows of teenagers could be seen gaming with strobe lights, creating a lively atmosphere.
A highlight of the festival was the appearance of Dan Fogler, known for playing Jacob Kowalski in "Fantastic Beasts". His presence added an international flavour to the event, delighting many fans.
The cosplay community at the festival was described as kind, with participants offering words of encouragement and support to one another. Tshegofatso Nabe mentioned that this is the only time of the year she can wear her costume outside without being looked at strangely, and she felt accepted and appreciated among her fellow cosplayers.
The Comic Con Africa was originally created by ReedPop and took place for the first time in 2018. Since then, it has grown in popularity, with around 70,000 people expected to attend this year's event. Thousands of people attended the festival, including self-professed nerds, comic book lovers, superhero fans, and anime obsessives, creating a diverse and vibrant community.
In conclusion, the Comic Con Africa 2022 was a successful event that brought together fans of various pop culture genres. It provided a platform for self-expression, connection, and celebration, making it a much-anticipated event in the African pop culture calendar.
