Tightened Criteria for Employment in the Tech Industry During Hiring Restrictions

Tightening Experience Requirements in the Tech Industry

The tech industry is experiencing a shift in job requirements, with employers increasingly seeking candidates with at least five years of experience. This trend, which began in early 2023, coincides with the rise of AI and has put an additional squeeze on less-experienced professionals.

According to data from Indeed, the share of tech job postings open to candidates with one year or less of relevant experience has decreased from 18% in Q2 2025 to 18%, a figure that remains relatively unchanged since early 2020. Conversely, job postings for more senior-level tech titles have fared better than their standard counterparts for over three-quarters of title-pairs with sufficient data.

This trend is not limited to tech workers. In May 2025, 1.9% of all applications started by job seekers whose recent occupation was outside of tech or math were on tech postings, down from 2.2% three years earlier. However, tech job postings still account for 37% of the job applications started by tech workers in June 2025, a figure slightly above the share three years earlier.

The weaker market for non-senior tech roles brings a cascading effect on newer entrants to the market. Fewer job openings mean fewer entry points into the tech field and shrinking opportunities to move up the job ladder. This is evident in the decrease in the share of tech job postings looking for candidates with 2 to 4 years of experience, which has dropped from 46% in mid-2022 to 40% in mid-2025.

Interestingly, job switchers working in software development were more likely to remain in the field than job switchers in other occupations between 2022 and 2024. This suggests a degree of job security and satisfaction within the tech sector, even amidst the tightening of experience requirements.

Competition among job seekers for available tech job opportunities remains stiff. If the tech hiring appetite doesn't start to rebound from its ongoing slump, job seekers - including recent grads who might have otherwise entered the field - are likely to look elsewhere.

It's worth noting that the tightening of experience requirements in tech job postings seems to be unique to the tech industry. In other occupations, the share of postings mentioning experience that were looking for at least 5 years has decreased from a 16% 3-month average in Q2 2022 to 11% in Q2 2025.

Despite these challenges, the tech industry continues to be a significant player in the job market. Job titles conveying seniority or management positions in tech have held up somewhat better than others, but the contrast in strength between senior and non-senior tech titles isn't a recent trend.

However, there is no specific information in the search results naming particular companies in Germany responsible for increased experience requirements in tech job advertisements since 2023. This suggests that the trend may be industry-wide rather than company-specific.

In conclusion, the tech industry is experiencing a shift in job requirements, with employers increasingly seeking candidates with extensive experience. This trend is putting pressure on less-experienced professionals and new entrants to the field. However, the industry remains a significant player in the job market, and job switchers in software development continue to find job security and satisfaction within the sector.
