TikTok and Meta are facing a $100 million lawsuit from Andrew Tate for allegedly removing his accounts, a practice known as 'deplatforming'.
In a surprising turn of events, the Tate brothers, known for their influence on social media and their past as former kickboxing champions, have filed lawsuits against TikTok and Meta (formerly Facebook), accusing the platforms of defamation and unlawful "deplatforming."
The lawsuits, reported by NBC News and The Hill, claim that the Tate brothers were targeted in a coordinated campaign to suppress, silence, and destroy their reputations, and that this campaign was conducted in concert with government officials, media operatives, and ideological pressure groups. This could potentially make Meta a state actor for constitutional liability.
The brothers, Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate, have amassed millions of followers on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram before their bans in 2022. Andrew Tate was banned from Meta in 2022 for violating its policies on dangerous organizations and individuals. TikTok and other social media platforms also banned Andrew Tate for similar reasons.
The Tate brothers are currently facing multiple charges of rape, human trafficking, and sexual assault in Romania. These charges were made before they filed their lawsuits against TikTok and Meta.
The lawsuits seek over $50 million in damages from both companies. TikTok is pursuing measures to strengthen its enforcement against this type of content, and according to a TikTok spokesperson, misogyny is not tolerated on the platform.
As of current, Andrew Tate has 10.7 million followers on a different social media platform, while Tristan has 3.4 million. Interestingly, the brothers were banned from another platform but were later reinstated after Elon Musk acquired the company.
Meta and TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment from our website. TikTok's investigation into the Tate brothers' content is ongoing, and they continue to remove violative accounts and videos.
The Tate brothers' lawsuit against TikTok uses similar language to the one used by a TikTok spokesperson, stating that misogyny is not tolerated on the platform. The outcome of these lawsuits could have significant implications for social media companies and their policies regarding content moderation.
