Tina Charles Claims WNBA's Record for Most Field Goals: Exploring the Steps Required to Surpass Diana Taurasi's Scoring Mark
Tina Charles Makes History with Connecticut Sun
In a significant turn of events, WNBA star Tina Charles is set to return to the Connecticut Sun for the 2025 season, a team that drafted her first overall in 2010. The Sun, who are currently struggling with a 10-31 record and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016, anticipate Charles playing a key role in their frontcourt as they pursue a championship, despite losing key players Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner.
Charles, a legendary figure in the WNBA, has an impressive resume that includes being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, winning the MVP award in 2012, two scoring titles, eight All-Star Games, and nine All-WNBA appearances.
In her recent game against the Chicago Sky, Charles finished with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. A highlight of the game was her history-making basket mid-way through the first quarter, which saw her surpass Diana Taurasi to become the WNBA's all-time leader in made field goals. Charles has made 3,347 shots during her career, a number that puts her ahead of Candice Dupree, who is fourth in the league with 2,842 field goals.
However, Charles' career has been marked by a lack of success in the championship department. With a potential return next summer, she may consider joining a contender if the opportunity arises.
In terms of free throws, Charles has made 1,462, which is less than Taurasi by over 1,000. Taurasi is the WNBA's all-time leader in free throws, with 2,517. Charles has not made a significant number of 3-pointers in her career, with only 197 made, a statistic that pales in comparison to Taurasi's 1,447.
As for her current season, Charles signed a one-year deal with the Sun in free agency and is averaging 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Her current scoring average would take 140 games to break Taurasi's scoring record, even with the league's new 44-game schedule. Charles is currently second on the all-time scoring list, with 8,353 points, just behind Taurasi who leads with 9,847 points.
Nneka Ogwumike is currently third in the WNBA for most field goals, with 2,849, while Tina Thompson is fifth with 2,630. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Charles' return to the Sun will impact their chances at a championship and whether she can secure the elusive trophy that has eluded her throughout her career.
