Jonas Vingegaard Takes Over the Lead in the Vuelta a España
Jonas Vingegaard has taken a commanding lead in the Vuelta a España after a strong performance in Stage 11. The Danish cyclist, riding for Team Jumbo-Visma, crossed the finish line first in the revised classification, securing his position as the clear favorite to wear the red jersey in Madrid on September 14.
The general classification times for Stage 11 were taken 3 kilometers from the finish line due to the cancellation of the finish on the Gran Vía, which was caused by pro-Palestinian protests. As a result, there was no stage winner for Stage 11.
Tom Pidcock finished third in the stage, 56 seconds behind Vingegaard, while Felix Gall finished fifth, 2 minutes and 19 seconds behind the leader. Matteo Jorgenson and João Almeida completed the top six, finishing sixth and second respectively, 2 minutes and 28 seconds and 52 seconds behind Vingegaard.
Torstein Træen, a Norwegian from Team Bahrain Victorious, who was the previous leader of the red jersey, finished fourth in the stage, 1 minute and 16 seconds behind Vingegaard.
Stage 11 of the Vuelta a España in 2025 had a start and finish in Bilbao. The route included the Balcon de Bizkaia, a double ascent of El Vivero, and a short but tough climb to Pike Bidea (2.3 kilometers at 8.9%).
The 2025 Tour of Spain will be its 80th edition and will start in Italy. The route goes through France, Andorra, and Spain, and will conclude in Madrid, which is the southernmost point in the tour. Thursday's stage will be a medium mountain stage in Cantabria.
On September 11, Valladolid will host the only individual time trial of the 2025 Vuelta a España. The route for the individual time trial is 27.2 kilometers long.
Looking ahead to the future, Vingegaard is the favored candidate in the general classification battle at the Vuelta a España on Thursday, September 12, 2025. With his impressive performance in Stage 11, it seems that the Danish cyclist is well on his way to securing the overall victory in the 2025 Tour of Spain.
