Tokyo-bound Koech aims for substantial performance following stellar season
Rising Star Phanuel Koech Gears Up for World Championships
Phanuel Koech, a Kenyan teenager, has been making waves in the athletics world. Born 16km from Eldoret City in Naiberi and later moving to Kewapmoi, Koech was raised by his mother after his father passed away before he was born.
Koech's recent success can be traced back to his time in Paris, where he finished second in a highly competitive 1500m race. In doing so, he broke the world U20 record with a time of 3:27.72, propelling him to ninth on the senior world all-time list. This impressive performance bumped Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse out of the top 10.
Koech now owns three of the four fastest 1500m times by an U20 athlete. His victory in Paris was significant, not just for the record, but because he managed to beat world champion Josh Kerr.
However, Koech's Paris outing was more about gaining valuable experience than chasing specific times or records. His goal for the World Championships in Tokyo is to take it one round at a time.
Koech will be competing with some of the most experienced runners in the sport, including Josh Kerr and Olympic champion Cole Hocker. He will also face established runners like Joshua Cheptegei, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and Timothy Cheruiyot.
Despite the fierce competition, Koech is not intimidated. He trusts in his training and advice, and believes he has the potential to earn a medal at the Tokyo World Championships.
This confidence was evident in his next Diamond League appearance in London, where he won the race with a time of 3:28.82, once again beating world champion Josh Kerr. Koech's goal for the London race was to win, as he believed it would act as his trials for the World Championships in Tokyo.
Koech's success in the sport can be attributed to his inspiration from the alumni of his school, St Francis Kimuron High. Specifically, world record-holder David Rudisha and 2021 Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir have played a significant role in his journey.
Interestingly, none of Koech's nine siblings are runners. Instead, one of them is a pastor, another is a driver, another is a teacher, and another is a mechanic.
As Koech prepares for the World Championships, he remains focused on his goals and the advice he has received. With his determination and talent, it's clear that we can expect to see more of this promising young athlete in the future.
