The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) has chosen Indra, a global technology and consulting company, to implement toll payment systems for connected vehicles on the I-485 Express Lanes. This marks a significant milestone as the I-485 Express Lanes will become the first highway in the United States to integrate C-V2X tolling technology into the roadside and host systems.

RaΓΊl Ripio, Senior Vice President of Mobility & Technology at Indra, expressed pride in the NCTA's continued trust in Indra's technology. He stated that Indra's collaboration and commitment to innovation lead to disruptive technologies, paving the way for a safer and more efficient transportation system.

The new system will utilise V2X technology through Indra's connected vehicle tolling solution (C-V2X Toll). This technology will enable connected vehicles to receive tolling information directly through their in-vehicle systems, eliminating the need for mobile applications or additional devices.

Wrong-way drivers, stopped vehicles, pedestrians on the roadway, or slow-moving traffic will be detected and broadcast to connected vehicles using C-V2X. This real-time detection and broadcasting is expected to significantly improve roadway safety.

Moreover, the C-V2X infrastructure for tolling will also be used to enhance road safety. Indra's 3D LiDAR perception and processing technology will analyse traffic conditions in real time, providing valuable data to improve safety measures and traffic flow.

The Road Pricing Summit, an annual forum for tolling and road pricing professionals across the USA, will feature discussions on these innovations. High-level speakers, a comprehensive agenda, and exclusive networking opportunities make this event a must-attend for industry professionals. Registration for the Road Pricing Summit is available.

Indra has previously successfully tested this technology in the US, through collaboration with Audi and Qualcomm Technologies. These tests paved the way for the use of C-V2X-equipped vehicles to potentially reduce congestion on toll roads and standardize toll payments.

Ripio expressed his confidence that the C-V2X Toll technology will revolutionise the transportation industry, making roads safer and more efficient. The implementation of this technology on the I-485 Express Lanes in North Carolina is a significant step towards this vision.

The Road Pricing Summit, the only independent annual forum of its kind for tolling and road pricing professionals in the USA, is the perfect platform for industry professionals to learn about and discuss these innovative developments.
