Champions League Travel Distances: A Comparative Analysis

The Champions League draw for the league phase has been made, and as the English teams prepare for their European adventures, the travel distances for each club have come under scrutiny.

Liverpool, with a 3,500-mile round trip to Istanbul, finds itself farthest from home, followed closely by Manchester City, who will journey to Bodo/Glimt in the Arctic Circle and return to Real Madrid, totaling over 7,000 miles.

On the other hand, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will face short-haul trips, with approximately 4,000 miles of travel for both teams combined. Spurs have short hops to Paris, Frankfurt, and Monaco, as well as a more testing expedition to Bodo in Norway.

Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta and his squad will have the least travel distance among England's six entrants to the Champions League this season, with around 3,775 miles for their four away games, including trips to Inter Milan, Club Brugge, Sparta Prague, and Athletic Bilbao.

Chelsea's travel distance for their Champions League away games is nearly 10,000 miles, mainly due to a 5,000-mile round trip to face Qarabag in Baku. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's manager, will be happier with two short-haul trips to Italy and a trip to Munich.

Notably, Kairat Almaty, the Kazakh first-time qualifiers, are situated nearer to Beijing than Istanbul. This fact might offer some respite to their travel schedule compared to their European counterparts.

Liverpool's away trips for the Champions League include Inter Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, Marseille, and Galatasaray, with Galatasaray being known for their penchant for pyrotechnics.

The 2019 Europa League final, which saw Chelsea triumph against Arsenal in Azerbaijan's capital, was a testing expedition for the Blues, but it seems their travel distances this season might prove even more challenging.

In summary, while some teams face long journeys, others have shorter hops, adding an interesting dynamic to the upcoming Champions League season.
